If you own an iPhone, Mercedes-Benz has added a new cradle that allows drivers to fully integrate the gadget into the vehicle’s architecture. With this new cradle, drivers can switch between using the telephone and audio functions with the push of a button…on the steering wheel! There is also a screen that sits above the car’s vents that shows the phone’s status and the track title and artist whenever a song is playing. And since it’s in the center console, the cradle is also easy to reach whether you’re the driver or the passenger.

In addition to its convenience, drivers can also expect crystal-clear reception because the iPhone automatically connects to the vehicle aerial when placed in the cradle. The cradle also charges the iPhone while it sits in there.

In Germany alone, more than 100,000 people have purchased an iPhone since it was launched last November. In the United States, there are probably a couple million people who could benefit from this new device. The new cradle is also the first of its kind. You don’t need any tools to install it. It simply plugs in and unplugs.

It looks like the Dodge Hornet is going to be in production soon. The concept car, which appeared at the Geneva auto show in 2006, hasn’t created much of a buzz lately. In fact, some people in the industry thought the idea might be dead. But it’s far from that.

According to Thomas Hausch, the vice president of Chrysler’s international sales, the two automakers are “working intensely on the Hornet study.”

Neither company has made an official announcement concerning the production of the Hornet. But the new model, based on the Nissan Versa, will likely be a collaboration effort. “I think we will announce announce something on this in the future,” Hausch said about the project. But those “in the know” think the new Hornet will be ready and on Nissan dealer lots by 2010.

The concept featured a three-door hatchback that was similar to the popular Mini Cooper. Industry analysts say the plans will likely produce an upscale version of a compact car in order to directly compete with the Mini Cooper.

Chrysler is also planning to manufacture other small cars in its China factories. But the new collaboration with Nissan will likely produce some interesting vehicles and features that you can enjoy within the next two or three years.

One of the more prestigious stops on the PGA Tour – the Buick Open – was in full swing this past weekend. If you’ve never been to one, you don’t know what you’re missing. 2. The golf course on which the Buick Open is played was once a farm. Arnold Lenz, the vice president of GM at the time, provided the foundation for the course’s clubhouse.
3. Currently, Robert Wrenn holds the record for the lowest score at the Buick Open with 26-under 272. He has held the record for 21 years.
4. Tiger Woods has appeared in eight Buick Open tournaments. He has never shot over par in any of those rounds.
5. Buick was the first corporation to sponsor the PGA Tour in 1958. The automaker decided to sponsor the event as a way to celebrate GM’s 50th anniversary.

The speculation is over and the rumors are true. Mercedes-Benz is planning to launch an all-new electric model in 2010.

With everybody looking for solutions to high gas prices, Dieter Zetsche, the CEO of Mercedes-Benz, confirmed the luxury automaker would also be a major contender in the upcoming electric car market. “We plan an electric Smart for 2010 and for the same year a Mercedes (electric) model as well,” is what he said in an interview with a local German magazine.

Currently, MB has about 100 electric Smart cars driving around the streets of London. But those are more or less to see how the public reacts to them and to see how they hold up in real world conditions.

Unfortunately, nobody has confirmed any prices yet. There are still some factors that need to be addressed before the automaker even discusses price. Will Mercedes-Benz sell the cars with the batteries installed or will the company lease the battery to drivers? The amount of competition in the electric car market will also play a role in the price of the cars. Other companies are planning to launch their electric car models in 2010 as well. I’m sure the ones that Mercedes-Benz creates will be much more luxurious and stylish though.

Don’t let the title of this blog post fool you. I’m not going to write about the food in Tijuana. Rather, this is a continuation of yesterday’s post about getting cheaper fuel only a few miles south of the border.

While many truck owners are enjoying huge savings by crossing the border and getting gas for less than $2.50 per gallon, it’s not as glorious as it sounds. The website is going to include a huge database of vehicles that have either been stolen or “totaled,” as declared by the insurance company. Drivers only need to enter their car’s VIN to look up its history.

The crime bureau is actually an organization funded by more than 1,000 of the nation’s insurers. That’s why the NICB can offer it to the public absolutely free.

The service is needed more and more each day, too. In the last five years, insurance companies have declared more than 12 million vehicles “totaled.” Most of these are the results of collisions, but many include fire and floods, too. About 30 percent of these vehicles go back on dealer lots to be sold without the customer’s knowledge. In California, about seven percent of used cars have been totaled by insurance companies.

The online service is slated to become operational at the end of June. When the website goes live, you can view it at NICB.org.
